This article is about Gemini Live on Android. Google’s Help page for it lists what you need but has no troubleshooting section, and the search results for “gemini live not working” are mostly Google and Samsung community threads. So we read Google’s Gemini Live page, its Android availability page and seven threads from the Gemini Apps Community, and wrote down what each source states. The result is a read of that evidence: the requirements Google gives, the causes people reported, the one case where the person confirmed a fix, and what remains unproven.

What does Google say you need?
Google’s Help page (Talk naturally with Gemini Live, retrieved 2026-09-26) says you need an Android phone or tablet, the Gemini mobile app or Gemini as your mobile assistant, and the latest version of the Google app. It says that for now Gemini Live is not available in the Gemini web app or in Gemini in Google Messages. It accepts a personal Google account or a work or school account with access to Gemini Apps, and says you must be over 13, or the applicable age in your country. It adds that updates are released gradually, so the latest changes may not be available to you yet.
The availability page (Gemini mobile app availability, Android, retrieved 2026-09-26) adds device limits: Android phones and tablets with 2 GB of RAM or more running Android 9 and up, no support on Android Go, and no access to the Gemini mobile app in the Android Work Profile. For a work or school account, you need a plan or licence that includes Gemini Apps. That last set of limits matters, because none of the threads we read mentioned the Work Profile.
This article covers Android. The Live page we read is the Android version, and we did not read Google’s iPhone version, so iPhone users should check that one instead.
What did the seven threads say?
We read seven threads from the Gemini Apps Community that came up in search for “gemini live not working”. This is a sample of top results, not a random or complete one. All seven were locked, meaning replies were disabled, and together they carried 219 “I have the same question” votes on 26 September 2026.

Only two of the seven had the person who asked report back, one with a fix that worked and one where nothing did. For the other five we cannot tell whether anything helped. That is the main limit of this evidence.
The one confirmed case: location
In the January 2026 thread (Gemini Live is not working (stays silent)), the person had a Pixel 10 Pro, was using it in Japan, and had the Play Store set to Australia. They had already tried English (US) for the account and Gemini, toggling to Google Assistant and back, clearing storage for the Gemini, Google and AICore apps, updating everything, Wi-Fi and mobile data, and a new Google account. Another user in Japan replied that switching their VPN to their home country fixed it. The person who asked marked that as the answer and confirmed it worked with a VPN set to Australia.
That shows something narrow: for at least one account, the location Google saw mattered, possibly the mismatch with the Play Store country. It is a single case. We did not check whether changing your apparent location is allowed under Google’s terms, so we cannot advise it. If Gemini Live is not offered where you are, the availability page above is the place to look. What we would take from the case is that travelling, or using a phone with an account tied to another country, makes location a suspect.
Age and account type: Google and volunteers differ
Google’s pages say over 13 and allow a work or school account with access to Gemini Apps. In the June 2026 thread, a volunteer said Live is only for personal accounts and that you need to be recognised as over 18, possibly through age verification. In the January 2026 thread, a volunteer said a work or school admin may have disabled it, which fits Google’s wording about access. We cannot tell which rule applies to every account, and it may vary by region or rollout stage.
If you use a work account, Google says you need a plan or licence that includes Gemini Apps, so ask your admin. If you recently left Family Link, one March 2026 thread reported the icon still missing, and a volunteer said the account status can take 24 to 48 hours to update. That timing is one volunteer’s statement, and we did not find it in Google’s documentation. We also do not know how a user can check whether Google treats their account as an adult, so we do not list it as a step you can complete.
Settings volunteers asked people to check
Volunteers repeat a similar list. We mark how much support each item has:
- English (US). Suggested in four of the seven threads, and a fifth person had already tried it. Google’s availability page lists many supported languages, including Japanese and Hindi, so this looks like a test people try, not a requirement.
- Gemini as the digital assistant. Suggested in the Galaxy S25, January 2026 and June 2026 threads, sometimes by switching to Google Assistant, restarting and switching back.
- Clearing the cache for the Gemini and Google apps, then restarting. A June 2026 volunteer said this will not delete your chats.
- Changing Gemini’s voice or updating Speech Recognition and Synthesis from Google, suggested for the “something went wrong” voice error. The person said it did not fix theirs.
- Clearing all data for Google Play Services. Suggested once, in the Galaxy A15 thread. A volunteer said it clears the local identity cache. We did not confirm it helps, and it affects more than the Gemini app, so we would leave it last. That ordering is our judgement.
What to check, in order
This order is ours, based on cost and on how well each idea is supported. It is not tested.
- Requirements. Android phone or tablet on Android 9 or later with 2 GB of RAM or more, not Android Go, not in a Work Profile, with the Gemini app and Google app updated. Use the phone app, not the web app.
- Account. Is it personal or work or school, and does a work account have Gemini Apps access? Did you recently leave Family Link? If you have a personal account, it can help to see whether the button appears there, though the person in the one confirmed case tried a fresh account without success, so this does not rule out location.
- Location and language. Did you travel, or is the country you are in different from your Play Store country? Then try English (US) and the assistant setting, and restart.
- Reset and report. Clear the cache and restart. Google says features are released gradually, so give it time after changes. If it still fails, use Help and feedback in the Gemini app to send your device model and what you tried. Two volunteers suggested this, and we cannot say whether Google acts on it.
What we could not verify
- We did not test any step on a phone.
- We could not read Reddit through our tools, and Samsung community threads that came up in search would not open for us, so the threads here are Google’s community only.
- We did not read Google’s page on Gemini in Chrome, so we do not say whether Live works on desktop.
- We did not read Google’s iPhone page.
- Volunteer Product Experts are not Google staff, and some replies conflict with Google’s pages.
- Seven threads is a small sample. It shows patterns, not how common each cause is.

How we researched this
On 26 September 2026 we searched the phrase “gemini live not working” with a web search tool that returns US results, and noted that the top results were community threads and status pages instead of a guide. We then opened the two Google Help pages and seven Gemini Apps Community threads in a browser and recorded each thread’s date, device, what was tried, the votes and whether the poster confirmed a fix.
